TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide last year. The short-form video sharing app has overtaken Facebook Messenger to top the list.

The British media BBC reported this information about digital analytics company App Annie on Tuesday.

Apart from TikTok, all the rest of the top five most downloaded apps are owned by tech giant Facebook. However, Chinese language video app Duoin shared the top spot with ByteDance, the owner of TikTok in its home country, China.

Since the start of this list in 2018, the top positions have been occupied by Facebook, i.e. the apps owned by Mark Zuckerberg. The most downloaded apps after TikTok in 2020 are Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger respectively.

Last year, then US President Donald Trump issued an executive order banning TikTok in the US. His administration considered the Chinese app a threat to national security. However, Joe Biden lifted Trump’s ban on TikTok as soon as he came to power.
